I came across an interesting video, which is a part of recently concluded Agenda Aaj Tak:
No, no don’t worry, I am not going to talk about the nationalism or the nation in this blog. There is something more interesting, much more interesting.
If we look at the panelists, we have Sambit Patra, Kanhaiya Kumar, Hardik Patel and Saket Bahuguna. When I come across any such panel, I feel a little sad. Why? Because this is an unfair debate. Sambit Patra is going to win all the arguments hands down. And fortunately, Sambit Patra knowingly or unknowingly mentioned it during the discussion.
In just the very beginning of the discussion, the debate got personal and Sambit Patra had to bring up his qualifications. That’s the very reason why the panel is unbalanced. He did his MBBS, followed by MS in general surgery. Apart from that he qualified UPSC Combined Medical Examination with All India Rank 19 in the year 2000. He also happens to have Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (MRCS). Competing with him are Kanhaiya Kumar who did a BA in Geography, followed by an MA and then Phd from JNU’s center for African studies with a very controversial Research Paper published in a Journal that was blacklisted by the globally trusted Beall’s List because it used to accept money for publishing research articles bypassing peer review, also called as a Predatory Journal. Sitting next to him and taking on Sambit Patra is Hardik Patel, I couldn’t find any educational qualifications past class XII for him. The last panelist on the panel countering Kanhaiya and Hardik, who does not speak much in this debate is Saket Bahuguna from ABVP, he has a BA in French Language and Literature from JNU, an MA in Linguistics from JNU, an MPhil in Linguistics from Delhi University, was a Junior Research Fellow at DU, a Research Fellow at University of Utah followed by being a Graduate Teaching Assistant and an Instructor at the same university.
My point being, Sambit Patra alone has the Intelligence Quotient higher than his opponents combined. How are Kanahiya and Hardik going to make a coherent rational argument stronger then Patra to bring him down? You could see it for yourself from the type of arguments they make. Just after the point when Sambit Patra put forth his qualifications, the very first rebuttal that Kahahiya Kumar comes up with is “you are a doctor, where is your clinic? You should talk about Paracetamol”. That should be a face palm moment for everyone and anyone who was expecting any kind of depth in the arguments.
It’s very simple and straightforward; either you bring experience to the table or you bring intelligence to the table (born or acquired doesn’t matter, you could also call it talent or skills). It could be a political discussion, a technical discussion, a management discussion, doesn’t matter what it is, but you have to have either of the two qualities and relatively more than your opponents to win the discussion. You can’t just come up empty handed, I mean you can, its a democracy, but you and your arguments will be demolished. Of course, you could keep shouting, interrupting, not let the other person speak and try to prove a point by raising your voice to a level that the other person goes mum for a few moments and then take that as your win. Or even better, you could just pick up any of the victim cards that fits your profile; which becomes an agenda for the next discussion plus you get a few brownie points as well!!
This is the biggest fault line with Indian National Congress today. The party is simply accumulating people with little or negligible experience as well as minimal proven intelligence and competing with the ones who have one or both of these qualities. I used “proven” explicitly because everyone thinks he/she is intelligent. But you have to prove it. The likes of Kanhaiya Kumar, Hardik Patel just to name a few have neither proved their intelligence in any way nor do they have any substantial experience. The only thing they have done is that they made themselves visible to a party who is running short on manpower.
Congress sends people like these as spokes-persons to compete with people with sharp minds and exceptional analytical and logical reasoning, more than enough exposure to complex problems and scenarios like Dr. Sambit Patra or Dr. Sudhanshu Trivadi (Phd in Mechanical Engineering) or Dr. Anand Ranganathan (Phd and post doc at Cambridge, UK; joined India International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, where he ran his lab for sixteen long years; joined JNU as an associate professor not in some African Studies or any other such field but Special Centre for Molecular Medicine. His laboratory works in the area of Directed Evolution and Pathogenesis, with special emphasis on Tuberculosis and Malaria); the latter were literally teaching and making “smarty pants” like Kanhaiya fall in line. Kanhaiya and Hardik would not even make to their classes.
Apples and Oranges!! wouldn’t even justify the chasm between the two sides.
Not only is the party not adding enough new members with high intelligence or experience, but it is actually letting go of the few it is left with. At first when I heard that Captain Amarinder Singh was let go of the party, I thought it was a fake news. But I was wrong, the party actually failed to retain him and in return will fail to retain Punjab in the upcoming elections. Does not matter who wins, but Indian National Congress just handed over its strong hold on a silver platter.
We are no more living in an era where brute force prevails. There won’t be any Lalus or Mulayams or any other bahubalis anymore. We are moving towards sophisticated intelligence. Arvind Kejriwal is a living example of this transition; I might not like his politics or his alliances, but his presence gives me a comfort that we are moving in the right direction. The thing that saddens me the most is that people like Kanhaiya, Hardik or Jignesh Mewani etc., the so-called youth leaders have a fanbase in India. They can’t offer anything constructive to their followers. You can’t offer what you don’t have. Can you? This is the saddest thing for a country who wants to be a superpower or super at anything in this highly competitive world. Kids who would follow them would tend to become like them and they would not even know what happened with them.
